Ross Levinsohn Promotes Success

Ross LevinsohnRoss Levinsohn is an adept CEO who is always looking to the future and what changes in public behavior mean for long-standing companies, products and services. He graduated from American University in 1985 as a broadcast communications major. Entrepreneurship has always been important to him, and his first role upon graduating involved a four-year period of running a business that he co-founded with another graduate from the same department. Known for his leadership skills, fast decision-making and ability to connect with others, Mr. Levinsohn has enjoyed a successful career at the top of many of America’s leading companies.

Early Roles

After his four-year period of entrepreneurship, Ross Levinsohn took roles at Home Box Office, CBS and Alta Vista. These roles showed him how people use media and how to get people to respond. In 2001, he had his first opportunity to work in management. Fox Interactive Media selected him as a general manager for its new and rapidly growing website, which focused on sports news. He advanced to the position of CEO within just three years, which was record time for the industry.

New Opportunities

In 2006, a new opportunity presented itself to Ross Levinsohn. James Heckman, another entrepreneur in the media industry, contacted him, and the two formed a partnership to create a digital ad company. Like his previous period of entrepreneurship, he co-founded the business and operated it for four years before Yahoo offered to buy the two partners out. Yahoo extended an offer to Mr. Levinsohn as a director of American operations. For the next several years, Mr. Levinsohn worked at Yahoo, Tribune Company and other media and technology organizations. He also founded Whisper Advisors and continues to serve as a consultant to new entrepreneurs.

Maven and Sports Illustrated

In 2019, Mr. Heckman’s firm, Maven, bought Sports Illustrated. The once-popular magazine had seen better days in terms of readership and subscriptions. Mr. Heckman knew that he needed Mr. Levinsohn to make sweeping changes in order to prolong Sports Illustrated’s life and improve its market position. Ross Levinsohn did this so well that Mr. Heckman picked him as Maven’s next CEO.
